Strange Culture and Lynn Hershman Leeson’s work

Strange Culture is an Interesting, and informative, new film by Lynn Hershman Leeson about bioart and bioterrorism.  Previously her work has provided a really interesting exploration of gender and technology and the sheer amount of screen time with Tilda Swinton is also a pleasure.

I have seen Teknolust about 20 times now through using it as a basis for audience research with Joan Haran.  I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to let this film grow on me and have introduced it to a range of audiences. My favourite event was with the Science and Justice Working Group at UCSC where the incomparable Ruby Rich and I discussed the film.  A close second was the focus group at WisCon which is a simply amazing environment.

I’ve only seen Strange Culture once so far – at the SF MOMA – it has a much more conventional narrative structure than her other work and there is a more didactic political voice. It is a great vehicle for opening up a number of debates about bioart, genomics and biotechnology.
