I just heard that the Journal of Sex Research have accepted an article on the gay gene and databases. The gay gene: from hypothetical genetic marker to social reality. In this I looked at the way that database collections can pull together quite random materials (that lack provenance in other fields) and give them a new authority. The gay gene seems quite emblematic of a mode of digital collection that becomes very hard to undo – once things are registered in online databases – they seem to have a life of their own.
